Outdoor - Materials and Colours

The MAMAGREEN production process is at the heart of our success. Unlike many other brands, our designs are made in-house. We have our own manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, and avoid depending on third parties. Our furniture is built in small batches, so that each piece receives meticulous attention to detail by skilled craftsmen. Where needed, we use modern technologies and machinery: finger joints, tenon-mortise, bending, kiln drying, laminating, etc. We continuously use the very best glues, connectors, hardware and other production materials. In our research and development division, we are constantly testing all of our products and materials, using state-of-the-art procedures in our laboratory. The materials must perform to the highest standards, in order to be used for MAMAGREEN furniture.

WOOD

Teak is well known as the ideal wood for garden furniture, thanks to its close grain structure, rich color and high oil content which makes it able to withstand harsh weather conditions. All of MAMAGREEN’s new teak comes from sustainable teak plantations in Indonesia. These plantations abide by strict sustainability criteria that include replanting trees after harvest. Managed by a certified government body and working together with the European community ensures that legality and ecological standards are met.

Recycled teak is especially resistant to weathering after being used for decades and is therefore an ideal material to produce long-lasting furniture pieces. Many teak buildings, neglected and no longer in use, are found scattered around the island of Java. Re-using the wood from these structures, instead of cutting new trees, helps to protect one of the world’s most fragile environments. Each piece of wood has its own personality based upon its history: Color differences, knots and small cracks from the natural growth of the trees and long periods of air drying; small holes where nails were used, bigger holes from bolts and occasional corrosion stains and other building marks give each piece an exceptional charm. Producing furniture from reclaimed wood requires careful selection of the best pieces to ensure no manufacturing problems. We then clean and grade the wood before our highly skilled craftsmen manually produce the rough-smooth finish that gives our teakwood furniture their unique character.
LAMINATED TEAK (natun & meika)
MAMAGREEN takes pride in leading the way in waste reduction. At MAMAGREEN we reclaim 99% of our waste. All wood used for our Laminated Teak Tops are recycled from our production processes. This wood is a mixture of plantation teak and reused teak wood. To withstand extreme outdoor conditions, all wood components are carefully selected according to grain and age and are then finger-jointed meticulously and laminated with a strong adhesive, suitable for outdoor use.

HPL

Table tops made from High Pressure Laminate are designed for outdoor use, highly stain and scratch resistant. They make for an ideal addition to the MAMAGREEN products, with great durability and a sleek look that complements our already beautiful furniture. Produced in Italy, the manufacturing process consists of pressing layers of Kraft paper with resins and aluminum at 150 C and at 9 Mpa.

ALUMINIUM

Powdercoated aluminum is ideal for outdoor use, thanks to the fact that it is lightweight and highly weather resistant. MAMAGREEN uses the strong alloy 6063 with an electrostatically applied, UV-resistant powdercoated finish, ensuring a scratch proof surface and protection from corrosion and UV rays. Available in many colors and on matte or gloss finish.

STAINLESS STEEL

Highly resistant to staining and corrosion, stainless steel is a very popular material for high quality indoor and outdoor furniture. MAMAGREEN uses stainless steel type 304, because the chrome and nickel in its composition makes it extremely corrosion resistant and very durable. Stainless steel is a 100% recyclable alloy. The beauty of its shiny surface is desired by designers around the world, and its easy-to- maintain beauty, makes it very practical for both residential and hospitality use.

WICKER

Synthetic wicker is tear-resistant and colorfast. This material can withstand extreme temperatures without deteriorating. Synthetic wicker is impervious to water, a characteristic with which the product maintains its strength and structure. Manufactured to only have smooth edges, this non-toxic material is guaranteed to be safe for all settings.

MAINTENANCE & CARE

1. ALUMINUM
Aluminum can be used all year round and is 100% weatherproof. Scratches may occur from sharp objects, but can easily be restored with our touch-up kit which has a 95% resemblance to the original coating. Aluminum should be cleaned regularly (about 2-3 times a year) to avoid build-up of dirt and grime. Standard cleaning involves soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive, acid, alcohol-based or solvent based cleaners that could damage the surface. Periodic cleaning with a gentle metal polishing paste, can be used in case of discoloration due to oxidation.

2. STAINLESS STEEL
Our standard collection is made of stainless steel 304, which is highly resistant to corrosion, ideal for outdoor furniture. Stronger, marine grade stainless steel 316 is available for special projects (such as cruises / beachfront), but subject to manufacturing lead times. While stainless steel is very resistant to rust, it is not impervious. You also have the choice of powdercoated stainless steel 304, if you prefer the strength of the stainless steel, in a different color.
Stainless steel needs regular maintenance in order to keep it clean and shiny. Tea staining is a form of superficial corrosion that results from the build-up of particles on the surface of the metal which then oxidize or corrode. It does not harm the integrity of the metal but is aesthetically displeasing. Tea staining is more likely in coastal environments. If cleaned regularly, stainless steel will maintain its polished look for a very long time. For cleaning, use a scotch bright pad or standard stainless steel cleaner and follow its instructions. Avoid the use of scrubbers like steel-wool, which may contain overly abrasive metal parts. Never use chlorine-based, alcohol-based or acid products.

3. POWDERCOATED STEEL
Highly resistant to rust and corrosion, powdercoated steel is another excellent choice for outdoor furniture. The thick layer of zinc protects the underlying metal from harsh weather conditions. MAMAGREEN offers a range of colors. For cleaning and care, we recommend brushing your frames gently with a soft nylon brush, to remove any debris or food stuffs. Then gently wash with a mild soapy solution. Rinse well and dry with a soft towel or cloth. Never use highly acidic or caustic solvents on your MAMAGREEN furniture – it is generally not necessary and can damage the finish. Avoid using abrasive pads or cleansers as they can scratch the finish and leave it dull and unattractive. For small scratches and dings, touch-up pens are available in matching colors.

4. TEAK
A. RECYCLED TEAK
Choosing recycled teak is picking out a special look, ideal for unique, casual-chic spaces. Reclaimed from abandoned buildings, our recycled teak comes in a rustic wire-brushed finish. Imperfections coming from nail holes, hinges or bolts, add character and give recycled teak its distinctive look. Small cracks and black or red spots may occur in places that have had long-term exposure to metal.
The brushed finish makes recycled teak sensitive to build-up of dirt (food remains, leaves, etc.), creating a slight risk for mildew. For this reason recycled teak tops are not advised for use under trees. Teak can change color when exposed to UV for long periods. Leaving items on top of a teak table that is in the sun can result in color marks, where the object rested since that area was not exposed to UV.

B. PLANTATION TEAK
Our ecologically harvested plantation teak comes in a very smooth sanded finish. Plantation teak is the ideal wood for outdoor furniture as it maintains its quality even in extreme heat or cold. Needing less maintenance than recycled teak, these tops still need regular cleaning to avoid build-up of dirt and mildew. The original honey color will slowly change to a silvery grey patina especially with exposure to UV. Thus it is not recommended to place objects on tables for long periods of time (eg: potted plants).

C. LAMINATED TEAK
All teakwood, if untreated will turn silvery grey when exposed to direct sunlight.

D. TEAK CARE & MAINTENANCE
For regular cleaning we suggest that you use a non-metal brush to remove any food stuff on the surface of the table, and apply a generous amount of mild soapy solution to clean it. Rinse with plenty of clean lukewarm water and dry with a soft dry cloth. Make sure it is completely dry.
Mildew: Rinse the furniture with your garden hose to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using a high-pressure washer, which can cause surface erosion, on the teak. Clean the teak with a solution of soap and water. Apply the cleaner to the wood with a non-metal bristle brush, and scrub affected areas in the direction of the grain to remove the dirt and mildew. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with your garden hose. Do not leave any cleaner on the furniture. Set the furniture in the sun to dry fully.

E. FINISHING FOR TEAK
Various products are on the market to clean and care for teak.
Teak shield: protects against most food and drink marks, but still allows the teak to weather naturally. This product needs to be reapplied every year.
Polyurethane Varnish: this finish gives a warm honey color to the teak, protecting against spots and weathering. This finish needs to be maintained yearly. Untreated: the teak will turn silvery grey, not affecting its quality.

5. HPL (High Pressure Laminate)
MAMAGREEN has high quality high pressure laminates (HPL) made in Italy with special characteristics of durability, easy to clean and maintain. MAMAGREEN HPL are manufactured by the advanced technology of the multi-head numeric controlled machines and using a milling cutter or a special designed cutter, that will guarantee the maximum precision and a perfect finishing of the processed material.
For spills, smudges and general cleaning: Clean the surface of the table using a soft cloth (one that will not bleed color) and clean, lukewarm water. Wipe the surface evenly, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and wipe with a soft dry cloth. Cleaning your HPL table top in a consistent manner on a regular basis will aid in long-lasting table top.
Never clean your table top using abrasive and hard cleaning materials, as they will cause scratches on the surface of the table. Only use a mild soap and never products containing bleach or acid to clean HPL. Don’t cut directly on the table surface with a knife or sharp tool. Always have a protective layer between the table top and hot serving dishes.

6. OUTDOOR TEXTILE
All our textiles come from European (Ferrari) and American (Twitchell, Sunbrella) manufacturers with extensive experience in outdoor furniture. Slings and upholstery can be easily cleaned with a cleaner for outdoor textiles, or with soapy water. For specific spots (such as ink or wine) the fabric manufacturers offer their own solutions. Always use lukewarm or cold water and air-dry textiles as excessive heat can be damaging and shrinkage could occur.

Outdoor furniture made with synthetic wicker requires very little cleaning or care, to last many years. Always avoid the use of bleach or other harsh cleaning substances and avoid brushing with hard bristles. Particularly metal bristles and harsh chemicals, must be avoided completely. Prepare a bucket with a generous mixture of gentle eco-friendly soap and lukewarm water. Never use hot or boiling water. Use a soft nylon brush. First rinse the whole surface with clean lukewarm water to remove any loose dirt and to remove any dirt or debris in the weaving if needed. Dip the brush in the soap mixture and brush in both circles and along the weaving. Make sure you brush the entire surface. Rinse off the soap mixture thoroughly with clean lukewarm water, until there is no soap residue left. Wipe areas dry with a soft towel or cloth and let dry completely, in the shade.

7. CUSHIONS
Our cushions are made of 100% all-weather materials starting with the foam core, to the liner, the zipper and the cover itself.
For easy cleaning, the cover can be removed. However our covers are not intended to be machine washed or machine dried: hand washing in lukewarm water and air drying is advised. When not in use we recommend storing cushions in a dry and airy space after cleaning. Protective covers are available for all our outdoor sofas.
